The chakra system is an intriguing yet scientifically unproven concept, which continues to draw the interest of modern-day yoga, reiki, and new age practitioners. The chakras are energy centers, which are part of the subtle body, one that cannot be seen. However, they are illustrated as colorful symbols that you can find on the walls of most yoga studios and spiritual stores.
The chakras originate from India, with roots in Hinduism and Tantra. What we know about them today is limited, including how many there are. Some people claim there are 7 main energy centers, while others say there are 12 chakras.
A holistic energy system, the chakras are focal points in the body where energetic forces and bodily functions connect and interact with each other, affecting emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing
Many consider the chakras as doorways or gates to perception. If they are open and aligned, they are balanced, but any one or several of them can be blocked or out of alignment at any time. The seven primary chakras are the ones most discussed, however there are five secondaries, as well as minor chakras and other energetic centres. The total number within the body (and in the dimensions and aura around the human body) varies widely according to different traditions; common systems are based on 5, 7, 12, 21 or 114 chakras.
"Each of the seven chakras are governed by spiritual laws, principles of consciousness that we can use to cultivate greater harmony, happiness and wellbeing in our lives and in the world." Deepak Chopra
Chakras were first recorded in India between 1500 and 500 BCE in the Vedas, where they were mentioned as "cakras".In Buddhism and Jainism, chakra means"wheel" or the "wheel of dharma", and the chakras can be envisioned as spinning wheels or vortexes of free-flowing positive energy in the body.
The seven-chakra system commonly used today was first seen in the Kubjikämata-Tantra, an eleventh-century Shaivism/Shaktism religious text, which was translated by Sir John Woodroffe in the early twentieth century.
