Have you ever spent time with someone and come away feeling inexplicably drained — heavy, foggy, flat — even though nothing specifically difficult happened in the conversation?
Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt uncomfortable, anxious, or out of sorts — only to feel instantly better when you left?
Have you ever taken on someone else's mood or emotion so completely that you genuinely couldn't tell where their experience ended and yours began?
If any of these resonate, you are experiencing the reality of energy exchange — the fact that human beings are not energetically self-contained systems operating in isolation, but porous, sensitive, responsive energetic fields in constant interaction with every person, place, and environment we encounter.
This extraordinary sensitivity makes us capable of deep empathy, connection, and compassion. But without awareness, skill, and practice, it can leave a person energetically depleted, emotionally overwhelmed, and genuinely confused about which of their inner experiences actually belong to them.
Energy clearing and protection practices address this directly.
"Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves, even when
we risk disappointing others."
— Brené Brown
What Is Energy Clearing?
Energy clearing is the practice of identifying and releasing energetic matter that has accumulated in your field that does not belong to you or no longer serves you.
This includes: emotional residue from interactions with others; environmental energy absorbed from spaces that carry stress, conflict, or trauma; thought-form attachments — the lingering influence of others' projected thoughts and expectations; ancestral energetic patterns passed through the family lineage; and the accumulated density of your own unprocessed emotional experiences.
The human energy field — the aura — extends significantly beyond the physical body, organised into multiple layers corresponding to physical, etheric, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions. Energetic accumulation can occur in any of these layers, and the effects are felt across all of them.
"The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind."
— Caroline Myss
Signs That Your Energy Field Needs Clearing
- Persistent, unexplained fatigue that sleep doesn't resolve
- A sense of carrying a weight that isn't yours
- Difficulty thinking clearly or accessing your own inner knowing
- Emotional states that feel "foreign" — arising without matching your circumstances
- Feeling depleted after spending time with specific people, regardless of how positive the interaction seemed
- Heaviness in specific areas of the body, particularly the chest, shoulders, or head
- A general sense of feeling "not yourself"
What Is Energy Protection?
Energy protection is the practice of establishing clear, sovereign boundaries around your energetic field — so that you can be fully present in the world, fully open-hearted, without unconsciously absorbing energies that deplete or disrupt you.
True energy protection is not about building walls or closing down. That blocks not just unwanted energies but also love, connection, and genuine life force. It is more like installing a filter than building a fortress — allowing authentic connection and genuine empathy while establishing clear discernment about what you choose to take in.
"Protect your spirit from contamination. Limit your time with negative people."
— Thich Nhat Hanh
Practical Energy Clearing Practices
Intentional Breath: Breathe in a bright, clear light — imagining it filling every cell and every layer of your field — and breathe out anything dense, heavy, or foreign. Three to five minutes of this conscious breath after draining interactions can produce significant clearing.
Saltwater: Salt has been used across cultures for millennia as a physical and energetic clearing agent. A saltwater bath or foot soak, with clear intention to release what is not yours, is a simple and effective daily or weekly practice.
Sound: The frequencies of singing bowls, tuning forks, or your own voice can clear energetic density from the field. Sound moves energy in ways that few other tools match.
Nature: Spending time barefoot on the earth (grounding), swimming in the ocean, or simply being in natural environments supports the field's natural tendency to self-regulate and release accumulated density.
Professional Energy Clearing: For deeper clearing — particularly of long-standing accumulations, ancestral patterns, or energetic cords from significant relationships — professional energy work is the most effective approach. In a Reiki Synergy Session, I work specifically with the aura, the chakra system, and the deeper layers of the field to identify and clear what has accumulated, and to strengthen the field's natural protective boundary.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are energetic cords?
Energetic cords are connections that form between people's energy fields — particularly in significant relationships. Cords formed in relationships characterised by codependency, control, or unresolved conflict can drain your energy and keep you entangled with the other person's field in ways that are not healthy for either party. Cord cutting is a specific energetic practice that addresses this.
Q: Can places hold negative energy?
Yes. Spaces where significant stress, conflict, trauma, or illness have occurred can hold energetic residue that affects those who spend time in them. This is why certain spaces feel immediately uplifting and others feel immediately oppressive — regardless of their physical appearance.
Q: How do I know if I'm an empath?
Empaths have an exceptionally sensitive and permeable energy field — they feel others' emotions and physical states in their own bodies, often without being able to distinguish between their own and others' experience. If you frequently feel overwhelmed in crowds, take on others' emotional states, or feel physically ill around certain people or places, you may have strong empathic sensitivity. Energy protection practices are particularly important for empaths.
