Grounding & Earthing

Return to the Earth.

Restore Your Whole Self.

A journey into the ancient wisdom and modern science of connecting your body, mind, and spirit to the living Earth beneath your feet.
There is a moment — you've felt it — when you slip your shoes off and press your bare feet into cool, damp grass, or walk along the shoreline where the foamy water rushes over your toes. Something shifts. The shoulders soften. The mind quiets. The chest opens. You feel, perhaps for the first time in a long while, genuinely present.
That feeling is not imagination. It is your body remembering something it has always known: the Earth is alive with energy, and you are made to receive it. Welcome to grounding — or earthing — one of the most natural, most powerful, and most overlooked healing practices available to every one of us, every single day.

What Is Grounding / Earthing?

Grounding, also called earthing, is the practice of making direct physical contact with the surface of the Earth — bare skin to soil, grass, sand, stone, or water. In doing so, your body connects to the Earth's vast reservoir of free electrons, a subtle but measurable electrical exchange that modern science is only beginning to fully understand.
For most of human history, we walked barefoot, slept on the ground, and worked with our hands in the soil. Our bodies were in constant communion with the Earth. Today, rubber-soled shoes, raised floors, and concrete cities have created a barrier that disconnects us from this primal source of balance and vitality.
Grounding is simply about removing that barrier — and what happens when you do is nothing short of extraordinary.

The Spiritual Connection to Earth

Long before science caught up, ancient traditions across the world understood the Earth as a living, breathing, sacred being. Indigenous cultures, Eastern philosophies, and earth-based spiritual practices all held in common a deep reverence for the ground beneath their feet — not as mere dirt, but as a mother, a teacher, a healer. In many Aboriginal traditions, the land is not something you own — it is something you belong to. To walk barefoot upon it is to be in relationship with it. Vedic traditions speak of Prithvi, the Earth element, as the foundation of physical and spiritual wellbeing. Traditional Chinese medicine has long mapped the kidney meridian — the root of our vital life force — to the soles of the feet, the very point of contact with the Earth. From a spiritual perspective, grounding is an act of sacred remembrance. It is the body re-entering its rightful relationship with the planet that created it. When we place our bare feet on the Earth, we are saying: I am here. I am present. I belong. The Earth is not passive in this exchange. She is constantly radiating energy — electromagnetic frequencies that pulse and breathe with life. When we ground ourselves, we open to receive that energy. We let the planet's wisdom flow up through the soles of our feet, through our nervous system, and into every cell of our being.
"The Earth doesn't need us to save her. She needs us to return to her — to listen, to feel, and to remember that we are made of the same sacred matter as the soil beneath our feet."
— Anita Moorjani
"Bring your attention to the soles of your feet. Feel the contact with the ground. In this moment, you are connected to the Earth — and through the Earth, to all of life."
— Eckhart Tolle
"The Earth does not belong to us. We belong to the Earth. Every part of this soil is sacred. Every pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods — all are holy in the memory and experience of our people."
— Chief Seattle, 1854
Many people who begin a grounding practice report a profound deepening of their sense of connection — not just to the Earth, but to themselves, to others, and to life itself. Anxiety softens. The endless mental chatter slows. A quiet, steady presence begins to emerge. This is not mystical abstraction. This is your nervous system, your electromagnetic field, and your cellular biology all coming back into alignment with the planet you call home.

The Science: What Happens in Your Body When You Ground

The Earth carries a subtle negative electrical charge on its surface, maintained by the constant flow of electrons generated by lightning storms, solar radiation, and geomagnetic activity. When you make direct skin contact with the Earth, electrons flow from the ground into your body — and this simple transfer has been shown to produce measurable, profound physiological effects.

Realigning Your Cells

Every cell in your body operates through electrical signalling. Your heart beats because of electrical impulses. Your neurons fire, your muscles contract, your immune cells communicate — all through bioelectrical activity. When you ground, the influx of free electrons from the Earth helps stabilise and normalise the electrical environment within your tissues. Think of it as resetting the electrical noise in your body's cellular network back to a clean, coherent signal.
Research has shown that grounding affects the zeta potential of red blood cells — the electrical charge on their surface that keeps them from clumping together. When this charge is increased through grounding, blood cells repel each other more effectively, improving circulation, reducing blood viscosity, and supporting cardiovascular health at a cellular level.

Drawing Out Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is at the root of almost every modern disease — from heart disease and diabetes to arthritis, cancer, and depression. The primary driver of pathological inflammation is an excess of positively charged free radicals in the body's tissues.
Free electrons from the Earth act as natural antioxidants. When they enter the body, they neutralise these positively charged free radicals, effectively quenching the inflammatory process at its source. This is not a metaphor. It is measurable electrochemistry. Grounding has been shown to reduce inflammatory markers, accelerate wound healing, and alleviate chronic pain — all by supplying the body with the electrons it needs to bring its inflammatory response back into balance.

Realigning Your Magnetic and Electrical Body

Your body is an electromagnetic being. Your heart generates the strongest electromagnetic field of any organ — one that extends several feet beyond the body and affects the electromagnetic fields of those around you. Your brain, your muscles, your cells — all produce measurable electromagnetic fields.
Modern life bombards this electromagnetic body with artificial frequencies — from Wi-Fi, mobile phones, power lines, and electronic devices. These frequencies are largely positively charged, and their cumulative effect can disrupt the body's natural electromagnetic coherence.
Grounding reconnects the body to the Earth's natural electromagnetic field, providing a biological reference point — a stable, coherent frequency that helps the body's own electromagnetic systems re-synchronise and rebalance. When your electromagnetic body is aligned, every other system in your physiology functions better: sleep improves, stress hormones reduce, heart rate variability increases, and the nervous system shifts from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) dominance toward parasympathetic (rest-and-restore) regulation.

Studies That Prove Grounding Works

The science of earthing has grown significantly over the past two decades. Here are some landmark studies that document what many have known intuitively for millennia:
Earthing Reduces Inflammation and Chronic Pain
A 2015 study published in the Journal of Inflammation Research by Oschman, Chevalier, and Brown found that grounding reduces pain and alters the numbers of circulating neutrophils and lymphocytes, and also affects various circulating chemical factors related to inflammation. Infrared medical imaging revealed measurable reductions in inflammation at injury sites after grounded sleep.

Grounding Improves Blood Viscosity and Cardiovascular Health
A 2013 study by Gaétan Chevalier et al., published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, demonstrated that earthing increases the surface charge of red blood cells, thereby reducing blood clumping and improving circulation. The authors concluded that grounding may be one of the simplest and most accessible cardiovascular interventions available.

Earthing Normalises Cortisol Rhythms and Improves Sleep
A pilot study by Ghaly and Teplitz (2004) measured cortisol levels in subjects who slept grounded vs. ungrounded over eight weeks. Grounded subjects showed a normalisation of their 24-hour cortisol profiles, significant improvements in sleep quality, and reductions in pain, stress, and anxiety.

Grounding Reduces Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)
A 2010 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine by Brown, Chevalier, and Hill found that grounded subjects experienced significantly less muscle damage and inflammation after exercise. Grounding accelerated recovery, reduced pain, and normalised blood markers of muscle stress — with implications for athletes and active individuals.

Earthing and the Autonomic Nervous System
Research by Chevalier (2010) demonstrated that grounding immediately shifts the autonomic nervous system toward parasympathetic dominance — the rest-and-restore state. Heart rate variability, a key measure of nervous system health and resilience, improved significantly in subjects who were grounded for just forty minutes.

7.83 Hz

THE SCHUMANN RESONANCE

The Earth's Natural Heartbeat

In 1952, German physicist Winfried Otto Schumann mathematically predicted — and subsequently confirmed — that the space between the Earth's surface and the ionosphere acts as a resonant cavity, producing a series of extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic waves.
The fundamental frequency of this resonance is 7.83 Hz. This is the Earth's natural hum — the electromagnetic heartbeat of our planet, generated continuously by the tens of thousands of lightning strikes that occur around the globe every day.
What makes this number remarkable is what it means for the human body. The human brain, when in states of deep relaxation, creativity, and meditative calm, produces alpha waves in the range of 8–13 Hz — and theta waves, associated with deep meditation and healing, between 4–8 Hz. The Schumann Resonance sits precisely at the threshold of these two restorative brain states.
When you ground yourself to the Earth, you expose your body and brain to this 7.83 Hz field. Research suggests this frequency entrains the brain toward calm, coherent states, supports immune function, promotes repair processes, and helps regulate the biological rhythms that govern sleep, hormones, and mood. It is, quite literally, a frequency of peace — one the Earth has been broadcasting since before humans existed, and one our biology evolved to receive.
"The Schumann Resonance is like the Earth's own alpha wave — the planet's resting rhythm, and a tuning fork for human health."
— Dr. Herbert König, successor to W.O. Schumann, University of Munich

Understanding the Schumann Resonance — and How to Track It

The Schumann Resonance is not a fixed, unchanging hum. It breathes. It fluctuates. And learning to read those fluctuations is one of the most profound ways you can deepen your relationship with the living intelligence of the Earth beneath your feet.

What You Are Actually Looking At

The 7.83 Hz figure is the Earth's fundamental Schumann frequency — its base note, so to speak. But just as a symphony contains far more than a single note, the Schumann spectrum produces a series of harmonics above the fundamental: approximately 14.3 Hz, 20.8 Hz, 27.3 Hz, and 33.8 Hz. These are sometimes called the overtones of the Earth, and they correspond in fascinating ways to higher states of human consciousness and brain activity.
When scientists and researchers refer to Schumann Resonance data, they typically display it as a spectrogram — a colour-coded chart with time running along the horizontal axis, frequency running along the vertical axis, and colour intensity representing the strength (amplitude) of activity at each frequency at any given moment. Deep blues and greens represent low activity; yellows, oranges, and reds represent elevated or intense activity.

How to Read a Schumann Resonance Spectrogram

Horizontal axis (left to right): Time — typically displayed in Universal Time Coordinated (UTC), spanning a 24-hour or multi-day window.
Vertical axis (bottom to top): Frequency in Hz. The bottom band (around 7–8 Hz) is the fundamental resonance. The bands above it are the harmonics.
Colour intensity: This is the amplitude — the strength of the signal. Cool colours (blue/green) = calm, baseline activity. Warm colours (yellow/orange/red/white) = elevated or intense resonance activity. A bright white spike means an exceptionally powerful burst of electromagnetic activity in that frequency band.
What to look for: On quiet days, the spectrogram shows steady, well-defined bands at each harmonic — a rhythmic, coherent pattern. On days of elevated activity, the bands brighten, widen, or show strong spikes. Many people who are sensitive to Earth energies report feeling the effects of elevated Schumann activity as heightened emotions, vivid dreams, fatigue, or a buzzing sense of energy before they ever check the data.

What Does Elevated Schumann Activity Mean for You?

When the Schumann Resonance spikes above its baseline — which happens naturally during periods of intense global lightning activity, geomagnetic storms, or significant solar events — many people around the world report similar experiences simultaneously: difficulty sleeping, intense or prophetic dreams, surges of emotion, heightened intuition, pressure headaches, or a deep sense that something significant is shifting.
This is not coincidence. It is biology. Your body is an antenna, exquisitely tuned to planetary frequencies that have shaped your biology for hundreds of thousands of years. When the Earth's electromagnetic field becomes more active, your own bioelectrical system responds in kind.
Periods of elevated Schumann activity can be thought of as accelerated integration windows — times when the planet is transmitting more intensely, and when your body's capacity for healing, insight, and energetic recalibration is heightened. Grounding during these periods can help your body process the increased energetic input more gracefully, while rest, hydration, and reduced stimulation can prevent overwhelm.
"We are not separate from the Earth's electromagnetic rhythms — we are embedded in them. When the Earth speaks in elevated frequencies, the body listens." — Ken Breen, Infinite Energy Source

Where to Monitor the Schumann Resonance Live

One of the most empowering things you can do as someone attuned to Earth energies is to begin checking the Schumann Resonance data regularly — and correlating what you observe in your own body, mood, and energy levels with what the planet is doing. Over time, this practice builds an extraordinary depth of self-awareness and Earth-attunement.

Ken's Tip: Build a Personal Earth-Awareness Practice

I recommend beginning a simple daily ritual: before you check your Schumann data, take two minutes to check in with yourself first. Ask: How is my body feeling today? What is my emotional tone? Did I sleep deeply or lightly? Do I feel a buzzing or heaviness I can't explain? Then open your Schumann data and observe. Over weeks and months, patterns will emerge. You will begin to notice correlations between elevated planetary activity and shifts in your own inner experience. This is Earth-literacy — the ancient art of reading the planet, updated for the modern age. And it is one of the most beautiful ways of confirming, in real time, what indigenous peoples have always known: we are not on the Earth. We are of the Earth. Her rhythms are our rhythms. Her heartbeat is our own.

How Long Should You Ground?

One of the most common questions I receive is: "Ken, how long do I need to ground to feel a difference?" The honest answer is that even short sessions deliver benefit — but like any healing practice, consistency and duration amplify the results.
5–10 minutes
Immediate calming of the nervous system. Reduction in cortisol. Many people report a noticeable softening of mental tension within just a few minutes of barefoot contact.
20–30 minutes
Daily practice (30–60 min)
Over weeks: improved sleep, reduced chronic pain, better energy, greater emotional resilience, improved immune markers. This is where the transformative results live.
Extended or overnight grounding
Using grounding mats or sheets while sleeping provides continuous electron transfer. Studies show significant cortisol normalisation, sleep quality improvements, and accelerated healing with extended grounding.
My personal recommendation: aim for a minimum of 30 minutes of direct Earth contact every day. More is better, and the practice costs nothing but a willingness to take your shoes off and be present with the planet.

How to Ground: The Beautiful Ways

Grounding on Grass

Standing, walking, sitting, or lying on grass — particularly damp morning grass — is one of the most accessible and effective forms of grounding available. The moisture in the grass dramatically improves electrical conductivity between your feet and the Earth, maximising electron transfer. Find a patch of lawn, a park, or a garden. Remove your shoes and socks. Let your full foot contact the ground — heel, arch, and ball. Walk slowly and mindfully, feeling each blade of grass beneath your feet. Alternatively, simply stand still, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and let the Earth receive you. Even five minutes of mindful grass-grounding in the morning can set a tone of calm and clarity for the entire day. Tip: Early morning, when the grass is still wet with dew, offers particularly powerful grounding conditions. The water on the surface acts as a conductive bridge, deepening the electrical connection between your body and the Earth.

Grounding at the Beach: Sand and Water

The beach is perhaps the single most powerful grounding environment on Earth — and it is no coincidence that so many people report feeling profoundly restored after time by the sea. Sand: Wet sand near the shoreline is an exceptional conductor of Earth's electrons. The combination of minerals, moisture, and saltwater saturation creates near-perfect electrical conductivity. Walking along the wet sand at the water's edge, or simply standing with your feet planted, delivers a rich, full-bodied grounding experience. Dry sand is also beneficial, though somewhat less conductive. Saltwater: Seawater is one of nature's finest electrical conductors. Walking in the shallows, wading, or swimming in the ocean places your body in direct, immersive contact with the Earth's electromagnetic field via the most conductive medium available. The entire surface of your skin becomes a receiver. The combination of saltwater minerals, negative ions from the breaking waves, and the Earth's electromagnetic charge create a profoundly restorative environment for the body. Even twenty minutes paddling in the shallows, feet and ankles submerged in seawater, delivers extraordinary grounding benefits. Many people instinctively spend hours at the beach simply feeling better — now you understand why.

Walking Barefoot: The Original Human Practice

For almost the entirety of human history, we walked barefoot. The modern insulated rubber shoe — for all its protection — severs one of our most fundamental biological connections. Barefoot walking on natural surfaces (grass, soil, sand, stone, mud) is grounding in its most continuous and natural form. Beyond the electrical benefits, barefoot walking activates thousands of nerve endings in the soles of the feet, strengthens the intrinsic muscles of the foot and lower leg, improves proprioception (your body's sense of its own position in space), and encourages a more natural gait that reduces impact forces on joints. Begin gradually if you are unaccustomed to barefoot walking — start with soft grass or sand and build up over time. The benefits are cumulative and wide-ranging. Many dedicated barefoot walkers report improvements in posture, balance, joint health, and a deepened sense of presence and connection to the world around them. Consider creating a daily barefoot ritual: morning grounding in the garden, a barefoot lunch walk in a park, or evening strolls along any natural surface. These small, consistent acts of reconnection add up to profound shifts over time.

Other Powerful Grounding Surfaces

While grass, sand, and ocean water are among the most effective, any natural surface that allows direct skin contact with the Earth offers grounding benefits. This includes bare soil and garden earth (particularly rich and conductive), natural rock and stone surfaces, fresh water — rivers, lakes, streams — and clay earth. Concrete and untreated brick, while not as conductive as natural surfaces, do allow some electron transfer when wet. Painted, sealed, or treated concrete and all forms of asphalt, however, are effectively insulating and offer little to no grounding benefit.

The Wide-Ranging Benefits of Grounding

The research and the lived experience of millions of people point consistently to the same extraordinary conclusion: reconnecting with the Earth changes everything. Here is a summary of the benefits that grounding delivers:
